2.8-MW solar plant in Azerbaijan to be completed this year - report

Apr 11, 2014 - Construction work on a 2.8-MW solar power station in the capital of Azerbaijan has been initiated recently with plans for its completion in 2014, daily newspaper AzerNews reported on Wednesday.

The project will take up an area of two hectares (4.942 acres) in the Pirallahi district of Baku. The land for the solar plant has been allocated to the State Agency on Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources (SAARES). The Executive Power of Baku City and the State Committee for Architecture and Urban Planning have already cleared the scheme.

The solar station will be built as part of the state programme of socio-economic development of Baku and its settlements in the period 2014-2016, the daily noted.

Solar power is expected to represent 40% of the total alternative energy in Azerbaijan by 2020. Meanwhile, the state is seen to invest approximately AZN 7 billion (USD 8.9bn/EUR 6.4bn) so that the share of utilised alternative energy sources in general is raised to 20% of the total amount of energy consumption in the next six years, AzerNews added.
