Transmission system operator (TSO) 50Hertz is seeking planning approval for the coastal sea section of the OST-6-1 grid connection that will link the planned Gennaker wind farm in the Baltic Sea off the German coast.

An application has been submitted to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the company said.

The submarine cable route runs from the two transformer platforms in the Baltic Sea north of the Darss peninsula to the landing point in Dierhagen, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and is around 53 kilometres long from the eastern platform and 35 kilometres long from the western platform.

The documents filed with the state ministry show the specific route and explain possible effects on nature and the environment. They are based on extensive preliminary investigations and discussions on-site and build on findings from neighbouring projects.

Following the application submission, the ministry will make the documents available to the public and interest groups and stakeholders will be able to comment. In the final step, the ministry will issue the planning approval decision.

50Hertz is expected to submit further application documents for the offshore platforms and the land route between Dierhagen and the Gnewitz substation by the end of the year.

The substation in Gnewitz is due to be approved shortly in a separate approval process under the Federal Immission Control Act.

The Gennaker offshore wind farm, now targeting a capacity of up to 945 MW, will feature 63 Siemens Gamesa machines of up to 15 MW after the developer, Skyborn Renewables, decided to switch to fewer but more powerful turbines in June.
