AB InBev inks 100-MW solar PPA in UK with Lightsource BP

Belgian brewer Anheuser-Busch Inbev (EBR:ABIT), better known as AB InBev, has signed a 100-MW solar power purchase agreement (PPA) with Lightsource BP to secure the electricity supply to its UK operations.

AB InBev said in a statement today that this is “the largest unsubsidised solar energy deal in UK history”. The 15-year contract calls for Lightsource BP to install new solar parks by the end of 2020.

The new plants will supply power to AB InBev’s two main UK breweries -- one in Magor, South Wales and one in Samlesbury, Lancashire. These facilities have the capacity to produce more than 17 million bottles and cans of Budweiser each week.

The move is part of AB InBev’s global 2025 strategy to reduce by 25% the carbon emissions across its full global value chain against a 2017 baseline. The brewer also aims to switch 100% of its purchased electricity worldwide to renewable sources by 2025.
