ABB kicks off construction of $23 mln factory in Bulgaria

ABB Group said it launched formally on Thursday the construction of a greenfield factory in Bulgaria worth some $23 million (17.6 million euro) in a bid to sustain the strong growth of its power and automation business and to meet future demand in Europe.

The factory, which will be located in the Plovdiv region, in the country's south, will act as an internal ABB supplier of low- and medium-voltage products, the company said in a press release.

The production unit will be built on a total area of 15,000 square meters and is scheduled to be put into operation by the end of 2013. It is expected to employ some 600 people and bring the total number of ABB staff in Bulgaria to 1,800.

ABB (www.abb.com) operates in Bulgaria through three companies in five locations. The three ABB production units in the country are located in Petrich, Sevlievo and Rakovski.
