About 79% of Scots favour govt backing for renewables

About 79% of the adult population in Scotland says the next UK government should adopt policies that back the continued development of renewable energy, a new study shows.

Meanwhile, about 63% of Scottish adults believe the next Cabinet should continue with policies related to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change issues, industry body Scottish Renewables said on Tuesday, while presenting the results of an independent poll conducted by YouGov.

“These poll results illustrate the strength of support for renewables among Scotland’s electorate,” said Scottish Renewables’ director of policy Jenny Hogan.

According to the results, only 26% of the interviewed support fracking for shale gas, 45% are in favour of nuclear power, while 49% back the construction or extension of coal and gas-fired power plants.

The YouGov survey was conducted online between February 24 and February 25. It included 1,008 Scottish adults aged over 18.
