Abu Dhabi fund to back 6-MW solar project in Sierra Leone

Jun 30, 2014 - The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) will lend to Sierra Leone AED 33m (USD 9m/EUR 6.6m) for a 6-MW photovoltaic (PV) project in Freetown, local media reported.

Apart from the long-term, low-interest loan, the ADFD will monitor the project, Abu Dhabi daily The National said Sunday. The USD-18-million PV farm will be funded equally by the fund and the Sierra Leone government. German solar products maker Masdar PV GmbH will supply the solar modules.

After it gets hooked to the grid in three months’ time, the Freetown plant is expected to generate enough to cover 8.5% of the country’s total consumption. The output will be enough to power 38,000 households in Sierra Leone's capital and its suburbs.

The solar park will be built along the Toke-Lumley road -- another project financed by the ADFD.
