Independent power producer (IPP) Orygen on Monday marked the start of commercial operations of the 177-MW Wayra Extension wind farm in the southern part of Peru.

The event took place after the facility obtained approval from Peru's system operator Comite de Operacion Economica del Sistema Interconectado Nacional (COES), Orygen noted in a social media post.

Spanning 2,474 hectares, Wayra Extension is located in the Ica region in the Nazca province of Marcona district. The 30-turbine site, together with its predecessor -- the 132-MW Wayra I, forms a 310-MW site touted as the largest wind complex in Peru.

Orygen was launched by private equity firm Actis in June, shortly after the UK-based investor closed the acquisition of Italian utility Enel SpA’s stakes in two Peruvian power generation companies.
