ACWA Power Co (TADAWUL:2082) has launched construction works on the initial phase of a green hydrogen plant in the Tashkent region of Uzbekistan, a project realised in partnership with local chemicals company Uzkimyosanoat.

The project, which was agreed upon in May, will be developed in two phases.

The first one, valued at USD 100 million (EUR 91.3m), will build a capacity of 3,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year to be utilised by the Uzbek chemicals industry as a replacement for natural gas.

The second phase, worth USD 4 billion, envisages the provision of 2.4 GW of wind power generating capacity to power the production of 500,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year, the Riyadh-based developer said on Wednesday.

ACWA already has a hydrogen purchase as well as power purchase agreements (PPA) in place for the assets. Once fully completed, the Uzbek site will be ACWA Power’s second utility-scale green hydrogen project after the NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia.
