Saudi renewables developer ACWA Power Co (TADAWUL:2082) has selected Energy China Group Corporation (CEEC) as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for a 400-MW solar project in Uzbekistan.

The contract was signed during a meeting between the parties in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, ACWA power said on Monday. The deal covers the construction of a photovoltaic (PV) park in the Tashkent province of northeastern Uzbekistan.

Once up and running, the complex is expected to generate 900 million kWh of electricity annually, replacing 257 million cubic metres of natural gas. A power purchase agreement (PPA) is in place with the National Electric Grid of Uzbekistan (NEGU), the Saudi developer said.

The solar project is part of a larger portfolio totalling 1.4 GW of solar and 1.2 GW of battery storage, for which ACWA signed deals with the government of Uzbekistan in March. The schemes, which will also include the construction of power transmission networks, are aligned with the Riyadh-based company plans to invest USD 10 billion (EUR 9.15bn) in the Central Asian country within five years.
