ADB ready to support renewable energy in Kyrgyzstan

Sep 18, 2014 - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is in talks with the government leaders of Kyrgyzstan to help develop the country's renewable energy sector, ADB vice president Zhang Wencai said yesterday.

When it comes to renewable power generation, the Kyrgyz republic relies mostly on hydroelectric plants and thermal power facilities. The potential cooperation, however, will help develop the country's solar and other renewable energy segments, Wencai said as cited by local news agency 24.kg.

The lender has plans to set up a regulatory and independent financial settlement centre in the country. Also, it intends to monitor the structure of local energy firms and see if there are options for consolidation. Furthermore, the bank may assist the government in the field of feed-in-tariffs (FiTs).

These initiatives will provide Kyrgyzstan with sustainable energy supply, which in turn will help it deal with issues such as periodic shutdowns, malfunction and lack of electricity, Wencai added.
