The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will oversee a programme for the deployment of 2 GW of solar power capacity in Cambodia as part of the country’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

ADB said on Wednesday it has signed a transaction advisory services mandate with state-owned utility Electricite du Cambodge (EDC), thus supporting a study aiming to find opportunities for combined solar and battery storage development. The initiative will run through 2030.

Additionally, ADB will assist EDC in implementing a 100-MW pilot project identified under the study. The demo scheme is expected to mobilise up to USD 100 million (EUR 101m) of investments and will be used as a model that will be subsequently replicated in other projects.

“This program will be Cambodia's most ambitious yet in the renewable sector,” said F Cleo Kawawaki, head of ADB’s Office of Public–Private Partnership.

Cambodia’s installed PV capacity accounted for 12% of the national total power mix in 2021. The country’s new power development masterplan indicates the potential to expand the capacity to over 3 GW in 2040.
