The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said on Thursday it will provide a USD-35-million (EUR 33.9m) grant to support the reconnection of Tajikistan’s electricity system to the Central Asian Power System (CAPS).

This project, expected to be completed in 2022, has a total cost of USD 40 million (EUR 30.9m), with the government of Tajikistan providing the remaining USD 5 million.

Specifically, the money will be used to install and upgrade modern relay protection equipment for synchronising Tajikistan and Uzbekistan’s electricity systems, expand interconnection points and bolster Tajikistan’s capacity for stable parallel operation, the bank stated.

When completed, this reconnection can help expand regional energy trade and improve regional energy efficiency among CAPS countries. “This project will enable Tajikistan to export summer surplus electricity to Uzbekistan and allow for more efficient use of regional energy resources,” ADB Finance Specialist Yuki Inoue added.

CAPS is a regional electricity transmission network coordinated among Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan.
