Adecoagro gets sustainability certificate for Brazil sugar, ethanol production

Jul 6, 2012 - Luxembourg-registered agribusiness and renewable energy company Adecoagro SA (NYSE:AGRO) said Thursday its sugar, ethanol and energy production facilities in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, had received a social, environmental and economic sustainability certificate.

The company's Angelica mill became the first one in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul and the 16th worldwide to receive Bonsucro Production Standard certification.

More than 33,000 hectares (81,500 acres) of sugarcane plantations producing 170,000 tonnes of sugar and 125,000 cu m (4.4 million cu ft) of ethanol were reviewed during the certification process.

The Bonsucro Production Standard is a guarantee that sugar and ethanol are produced in respect to legal compliance, biodiversity and ecosystem impacts, human rights, production and processing, and continuous improvement. The certification is also up to the sustainability standards set by the European Union Renewable Energy Directive and is expected to help boost Adecoagro's sales in the EU.
