South American electric utility AES Andes announced on Thursday that its 78-MW San Matias wind farm in central Chile reached commercial operation following the approval from the grid operator.

San Matias, situated in Los Angeles, Biobio region, is AES Andes’ fifth wind farm.

“Today, more than 50% of our company's portfolio is based on renewable technologies and battery storage,” said AES Andes General Manager Javier Dib.

AES Andes says it has invested over USD 1.8 billion (EUR 1.58bn) since launching its Greentegra green energy strategy 2018, enabling it to incorporate 1,163 MW of wind, solar and battery storage capacity. In Chile, the company has 767 MW of renewables under construction, a contracted project portfolio of 1,700 MW under development, and expects to invest over USD 2.5 billion between 2024 and 2027.
