Bulgaria's NEK opens tender for new turbines at pumped storage plant
Sep 18, 2024 13:50 CESTAES Bulgaria, a unit of U.S.-based energy corporation AES, said on Wednesday that its thermal power plant (TPP) AES Galabovo and St. Nikola wind farm produced 1,174,500 MWh of electricity combined in the first quarter of 2022, marking an year-on-year increase of over 20%.
Coal-fired AES Galabovo generated 1,031,052 MWH of power in the first quarter, while the St. Nikola wind farm produced nearly 143,500 MWh, AES Bulgaria said in a statement.
In March alone, the TPP produced 368,160 MWh, covering 10% of Bulgaria's electricity consumption last month, according to the statement.
The wind farm generated 52,900 GWh of electricity in March, up 33% on an annual comparison basis.
In 1999, a unit of AES Corporation purchased a majority stake in Bulgaria's Maritsa East 1 TPP project, renamed AES Galabovo in 2009. AES completed the acquisition of full ownership of the thermal power plant from Ireland's Consolidated Continental Commerce Limited (3C) in 2005.
