AES El Salvador and Central-American company Corporacion Multi Inversiones (CMI) have completed a 10-MW photovoltaic (PV) plant in El Salvador.

Located in the La Union department, the Pasaquina PV facility required USD 16 million (EUR 13.7m) in investments and, with its 44,000 solar panels, is expected to generate enough power to meet the annual demand of 33,000 local homes, the local unit of AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) said on Wednesday.

The facility represents a portion of the 100-MW Bosforo project, being built in three stages. Two other plants are currently under construction as part of Bosforo I. They are scheduled to begin operations in July and September, respectively.

The Bosforo project, comprised of ten 10-MW solar farms, requires a total investment of USD 160 million . Phase II of the project will have 40 MW of capacity and phase III will again be of 30 MW. When completed, the solar park will be able to generate enough power to offset 175,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year.

Spanish company Isotron is in charge of the construction, with JinkoSolar Holding Co Ltd (NYSE:JKS) being the supplier of solar panels. AES Soluciones will operate the power plants, AES noted.
