An AES Corp (NYSE:AES) 220-MW solar photovoltaic power complex in Pennsylvania has initiated commercial operations, a contractor announced on Tuesday.

The Great Cove Solar power station consist of two solar facilities equipped with over 485,000 panels, with arrays covering over 1,600 acres (647.5 ha) in Franklin and Fulton Counties, Mill Creek Renewables (MCR) said.

According to the contractor and AES, Great Cove Solar is the largest solar project in Pennsylvania. The complex can generate enough electricity to power approximately 38,000 homes.

AES is the long-term owner and operator of the facility, the power utility says on its website. The company struck a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the University of Pennsylvania, which procured all electricity generated by Great Cove Solar to supply its academic campuses and the University of Pennsylvania Health System in the Greater Philadelphia area.
