The African Development Bank (AfDB) said on Friday that a fund managed by it will grant USD 777,000 (EUR 689,000) to back the development of a 72-MW solar project in Cameroon.

In particular, the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) will grant the above-mentioned sum to JCM Greenquest Solar Corp so it could carry out environmental and social impact assessments and cover the cost of technical, legal and financial advisory services.

The 72-MW photovoltaic (PV) plant is expected to be Cameroon’s first renewable energy Independent Power Producer (IPP). At present, the African country has 1,400 MW of installed power generation capacity, of which hydropower plants account for 60%.

Cameroon’s energy access rate was just 18% in 2013. The goal of the nation is to reach an electrification rate of 75% by 2030 under the government’s long-term Energy Sector Development Plan (PDSE 2030), the AfDB said.
