The African Development Fund, administered by the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group, has approved a USD-27.4-million (EUR 24.3m) grant for solar, mini grid and net metering projects in Ghana.

The installed renewable energy capacity will be 67.5 MW and will produce around 111,300 MWh of electricity annually, the AfDB said on Wednesday.

More specifically, the grant funding will support the development of 35 mini grids, standalone solar photovoltaic systems in 400 schools, 200 units in healthcare centres and 100 units for community energy service facilities in the Volta Lake region. Up to 12,000 units of roof-mounted net-metered solar plants will be installed for public institutions, small and medium-sized enterprises and selected households.

The initiative is using USD 28.5 million in co-financing from the Climate Investment Funds’ Scaling Up Renewable Energy Programme, while USD 13.3 million have been disbursed by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs.

The initiative aligns with Ghana’s efforts to promote the deployment renewable energy capacity and supports its goal of providing universal power access to its citizens. The country has set a 10% renewables goal by 2030.
