Nairobi-based apparel maker United Aryan EPZ (UAL) announced today that it has inaugurated a 1.8-MWp rooftop solar array, saying that it the largest system of its kind in East Africa.

The photovoltaic (PV) system consists of 3,334 solar panels and has an estimated annual power output of 2.3 GWh, enough to allow United Aryan to reduce its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 33,100 tonnes.

The rooftop plant will help UAL lower its electricity costs by up to 72%, and save around USD 5.3 million (EUR 4.8m) during the system's lifecycle, according to the announcement.

Premier Solar Solutions, the Kenyan subsidiary of Starsight Premier Energy Group, was hired as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor.

Pan-African Energy-as-a-service (EaaS) company Solarise Africa provided the full-service commercial solution to finance the PV project.
