Swedish energy and infrastructure consultancy AFRY (STO:AFRY) has been hired by Philippine power company Aboitiz Power Corp (PSE:AP) as owner’s engineer for a 172-MWp solar project in the province of Negros Occidental in Western Visayas region.

The contract was awarded by Aboitiz Solar Power Inc and concerns the plant’s construction and grid interconnection works. Namely, AFRY will provide project management assistance, design review and support services during the construction and commissioning, according to a statement released today.

Spanning around 143 hectares, the Calatrava project will have fixed ground-mounted solar panels. The facility, which is scheduled to go live by the end of 2024, will be connected to the 230-kV Calatrava substation.

Construction works are set to start in September. They will be executed by SUMEC Complete Equipment and Engineering Co Ltd, an earlier AboitizPower press release had said.

Calatrava is one of the five projects in AboitizPower’s solar portfolio. The Philippine company has nearly 1,000 MW of renewable energy projects in the pipeline, with plans to build at least 3,700 MW by 2030.

Aboitiz announced plans to build the Calatrava plant in August when it unveiled two solar initiatives. The other project will be located in Olongapo, Zambales and will have a capacity of 211 MWp, at the time described as the largest solar project in Aboitiz’ portfolio.
