French industrial gases supplier Air Liquide (EPA:AI) last week announced the inauguration of a liquid hydrogen production and logistics infrastructure facility in the US state of Nevada that runs solely on renewable energy.

Air Liquide has invested USD 250 million (EUR 232.5m) in the facility and the associated logistics infrastructure, creating jobs for 700 contractors as well as 25 full-time positions at the plant at full capacity.

The company said in a statement that the plant in North Las Vegas is now its largest globally. It has the capacity to produce 30 tonnes of liquid hydrogen per day and will supply the clean mobility market on the West Coast, California in particular, and various industrial customers. The output of the facility is estimated to be enough to supply over 40,000 fuel cell vehicles in California.

Air Liquide has committed to invest some EUR 8 billion in the low-carbon hydrogen value chain by 2035 and reach a total of 3 GW of electrolysis capacity by the end of the current decade. The group’s objective is to at least triple its hydrogen sales to EUR 6 billion by 2035.
