French renewable power producer and developer Akuo and Spanish offshore wind specialist BlueFloat Energy intend to build a 200-MW floating wind park off France’s Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean.

The proposal was recently presented during an information session dedicated to the prospects of offshore wind development in the remote French department.

Under the plan, the floating park will be installed between 5 km and 10 km off the Sainte-Marie and Sainte-Suzanne communes and will be able to generate electricity to cover around 25% of the island’s entire electricity consumption. With a proposed capacity of "at least" 200 MW, its commissioning could take place by 2030, the partners said.

Akuo and BlueFloat will carry out the scheme under a partnership with the Maritime Cluster of Reunion Island and the Temergie Energy Transition Cluster. The developers explained that the floating wind technology is suitable for the extreme weather conditions of the island and will have a lower environmental impact as compared to fixed-turbine foundations.
