French renewables firm Akuo Energy SAS has brought online its 19-MWh Madinina energy storage system in the French island of Martinique in the Caribbean.

Located in the municipality of Ducos, the lithium-ion battery is equipped with six of Akuo’s GEM containers, the French company said last week. Its contractual effective capacity is 12 MWh.

The facility is connected to the island’s power grid, which is operated by utility EDF. Its integration into the network will facilitate the wider penetration of renewable energy capacity on the Caribbean island. The system will store excess power and feed it back during periods of peak consumption.

The battery uses an energy management system developed by Akuo, which enables frequency regulation for enhancing the stability of the grid.

Debt for the project was provided by Fench banking group BPCE, while the equity requirement was financed by French renewable energy firm Methanor.
