US ready-mix concrete and natural aggregates firm Alamo Cement Company announced the commissioning of a new on-site solar power system which should supply up to 17.8 GWh of electricity per year to the company's plant in San Antonio, Texas.

The solar farm, which covers 45 acres, is expected to provide up to 15% of the annual electricity consumption of Alamo’s facility and cut its carbon dioxide emissions by 8,000 tons per year.

Alamo said its plant will have the largest customer-owned solar power source in the Greater San Antonio area. The US cement firm did not disclose the amount of the investment made in the system.

"We continue to look for more opportunities to enhance sustainability in our operations, and plan to build on our experience from this San Antonio project and explore implementing additional renewable power systems within our Group," Alamo’s CEO Massimo Toso noted in the press release.

Alamo Cement is part of Italian cement production group Buzzi Unicem SpA (BIT:BZU). It operates 78 batching plants and four aggregate quarries.
