Albania awards 222.5 MW of onshore wind to three bidders

The government of Albania has awarded 222.48 MW of onshore wind power capacity in the country’s first auction with bidder-selected sites, attracting bids as low as EUR 44.88 (USD 49.50) per MWh.

The capacity was awarded to three bidders, namely Total Eren, Turkey’s Guris and Austria’s Verbund, as shown in the table below.

The tender was run by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy with support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) financed the technical assistance that covers the tender, which was launched in 2021.

To date, Albania has also awarded 240 MW of solar power and is now preparing to launch a new 300-MW solar auction in the coming months, again financed by SECO.

The EBRD said in a statement that it is also working with the Albanian government to assess the country’s offshore wind potential.
