The Algerian government has signed contracts to allocate 3,000 MW of solar capacity to the companies that emerged as winners in two tenders.

The projects, involving the construction of 20 solar farms across the North African country, were awarded to ten companies or consortia, including two Algerian companies and three Algerian companies in partnership with foreign companies, state-owned utility Sonelgaz said in a statement.

The contracts include design, engineering, assembly, training, testing, and commissioning of the solar projects.

The capacity was allocated as part of the 1-GWp scheme which was launched at the end of 2021 and the 2-GW tender which kicked off in March 2023.

The 2-GW initiative involves the construction of 15 solar plants with capacities ranging from 80 MW to 220 MW. The solar facilities will be located in 12 provinces across the country -- Bechar, M'Sila, Bordj Bou Arreridj, Batna, El Oued, Ghardaia, Tiaret, Laghouat, Touggourt, El M'ghair, Biskra, and Ouled Djellal.

The Solar 1,000 scheme envisages the construction of five solar plants, with individual capacities ranging from 50 MW to 300 MW. The solar parks will be built in the provinces of El Oued, Ouargla, Touggourt, Laghouat, and Bechar.
