Algeria preps new law to support green energy transition

Algeria is working on new legislation for the transition to green energy as the government aims to support the transformation in all of its aspects, the country's minister of renewable energy Benattou Ziane said on Sunday.

In a speech delivered at a meeting of the Algerian Confederation of Citizen Employers (CAPC) in the capital Algiers, Ziane assured that the country wants to achieve a smooth and safe energy transition based on the principles of economic efficiency and diversity of sources.

To ensure its energy security in the long term, Algeria is seeking to develop a new energy model that will help it overcome the challenges the country is facing as a result of the rapid structural changes in the global energy sector, the minister said as cited by newspaper Echorouk.

In Ziane's words, the new energy model must be based on the principle of diversification in the areas of energy sources, transport technologies, financing ways and international partners as well as diversification of markets.

The Algerian government is currently awaiting proposals for a 1-GW solar photovoltaic tender that had drawn interest from 111 investors by the middle of May. The auction targets the allocation of capacity in lots of between 50 MW and 300 MW in five provinces of the country.
