Algeria's state-owned utility Sonelgaz has launched a tender that aims to award 2 GW of solar capacity to support the North African country's renewable energy strategy.

The winners in the auction will be awarded contracts for the construction of 15 solar parks with individual capacities ranging from 80 MW to 220 MW. The plants will be located in 11 provinces from Algeria's south to the Hautes Plaines in the Atlas Mountains in the north.

Bids will be accepted by May 29, 2023.

The tender marks the beginning of the implementation of Algeria's renewable energy strategy under which the country aims to boost its green power capacity to 15 GW by 2035.

Sonelgaz, the power and natural gas distributor in Alegria, has been commissioned with the implementation of the strategy. The fresh solar capacity will help meet the North African country's increasing power demand, diversify its energy sources and support its ambitions to export electricity.

In December 2021, Algeria opened a 1-GW tender targeting the allocation of capacity in lots of between 50 MW and 300 MW.
