Algeria's Ministry of Energy Transition and Renewable Energy and the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Endowments on Monday signed an agreement to support the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on the roofs of mosques, Quranic schools and institutions across the country.

The cooperation between the ministries envisages also support for the use of solar heaters, energy-saving lighting and devices with low-energy consumption, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Renewable Energy said on its website. It is part of the government's strategy for the development of renewable energy and solar power in particular.

The signing of the agreement comes at a time when climate change is pushing towards the expansion of renewable energy, the minister of energy transition and renewable energy Benattou Ziane said as cited by state-owned Algeria Press Service.

The initiative is part of Algeria's efforts to expand the use of solar power. At the end of 2021, the country launched tenders for the deployment of 1 GWp of solar capacity which, according to Ziane, has drawn the interest of more than 80 local and international developers.
