Infener to set up 20-MW green hydrogen hub in Germany
Sep 17, 2024 14:59 CESTAlgeria's government has mandated the Ministry of Energy and Mining to map out a national strategy for hydrogen development as the North African country sees potential to become a key player in the region.
Preliminary data shows that Algeria has great potential to play a prominent role in the region thanks to its huge solar resources, the availability of gas and power networks, significant water resources as well as research and development capabilities, energy and mining minister Mohamed Arkab said on Saturday.
A ministerial committee has been set up to work on the strategy. It consists of representatives from the energy, energy transition, higher education and scientific research sectors as well as representatives of start-ups and companies in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors.
During a speech on the use of green hydrogen in the energy transition, Arkab stressed also that the country has a strategic location, ports and facilities necessary for gas transportation that would enable it to meet the local and regional demand for hydrogen.
Now Algeria must prepare an appropriate legislative and regulatory framework, identify priority sectors for hydrogen application, do the necessary research for trial projects, search for financing and develop international partnerships, Arkab added.
The minister concluded that hydrogen development is a strategic issue for the security of the country's energy supply in the long term.
