Algeria's renewables market draws interest from Denmark

Danish energy companies are keen to invest in Algeria's renewable energy market, especially in wind power, Denmark's ambassador to the North African country said on Monday.

The interest was expressed during a meeting between Vanessa Vega Saenz and the Algerian energy and mining minister Mohamed Arkab that took place in the capital Algiers.

The two parties discussed a potential strengthening of the cooperation between the two countries in the area of energy with a focus on renewable energy and energy efficiency. Other topics of discussion included business and investment opportunities and ways for exchanging expertise.

The meeting follows the Energy Business Forum 2022 that was held last week in the capital Algiers. In her speech at the forum, Algeria's minister of environment and renewable energy Samia Moualfi called for strengthening the cooperation between the EU and Algeria and promoting investments and partnerships between companies from the two sides in the areas of renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Moualfi emphasised also Algeria's target of having 15 GW of renewable energy capacity installed by 2035. As a step toward this goal, the country is now seeking to award 1 GW of solar capacity in a tender.

Apart from Denmark, Algeria's green energy market has attracted interest also from investors from other countries. In June, the chief executive of Turkey's TAY Group, Mesut Toprak, said his company was planning to build an integrated plant for the production of solar panels in Algeria.
