Argentine aluminium producer Aluar Aluminio Argentino SAIC (BCBA:ALUA) will invest USD 400 million (EUR 366.1m) in a massive expansion of the wind farm that directly powers its production plant in Chubut province, southern Argentina.

The wind farm, located outside of the city of Puerto Madryn where Aluar runs production of primary aluminium, currently generates 246 MW after four phases of construction.

The expansion will add 336 MW of additional power using 6-MW Goldwind turbines, Aluar said on Thursday.

The stage five project is expected to be finalised by the end of 2026. The whole wind farm will then reach 582 MW of capacity, spanning 200 square kilometres (77.2 sq miles), equivalent to the size of Buenos Aires, Aluar said.

Aluar, like all large users in Argentina’s wholesale electricity market, is required by law to meet 20% of its electricity demand with renewable energy sources by the end of 2025. Aluar previously said the wind farm’s 81-MW fourth stage would enable it to comply with the law.
