Amazon touts record 8.3 GW of renewable energy purchases in 2022

Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) is keeping up with its renewable energy purchases, adding a further 25 projects in 2022 and taking its total renewable energy portfolio to more than 20 GW.

The latest projects come on top of the 108 already announced by the tech and e-commerce group in 2022, which combined add up to 8.3 GW of agreed renewable energy purchases for the whole year. Amazon, the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy, said this sets a new record for the most renewables announced by a single company in the span of a year.

The newly announced group of 25 includes 11 projects in Europe totaling 372 MW. These renewables are located in Finland, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK and include two new offshore wind projects in Europe for a combined 280 MW of capacity.

Four of the projects totalling 918 MW are located in the US, in Arizona, California and Texas. Among them is a solar-plus-storage project in California and an on-site solar project at the Amazon Air Hub in the same state.

The company also added 10 projects in India, Indonesia and Japan, including its third 200 MW wind-solar hybrid project in India. In Japan, Amazon invested in three on-site solar projects and a new 38-MW utility-scale solar project.

Following the latest string of renewable energy purchases, Amazon has now backed 401 projects in 22 countries.

The projects keep the company on track to power its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025, five years ahead of its original goal.
