Dubai-based renewables company AMEA Power LLC said today it has commenced construction work on the 20-MW expansion of an existing solar power plant in Togo, which will also get a battery storage system.

The Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed facility, currently having a power generating capacity of 50 MW following two project phases, is located in the village of Blitta. At 70 MW, it is expected to be the largest of its kind in West Africa.

The official groundbreaking ceremony for Phase 3 was attended by Faure Gnassingbe, President of the Togolese Republic. Completion is seen to take place by the end of the year.

After providing USD 10 million (EUR 9.3m) in financing for the project’s second phase, the Abu Dhabi Exports Office (ADEX) has now provided an additional loan of USD 25 million for the third phase.
