Dubai-based renewables developer-operator AMEA Power on Saturday signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) and other documents to advance the development of the 300-MW Aysha-1 wind project in Ethiopia.

The USD-620-million (EUR 561.6m) project, set in Ethiopia’s Somali Region State, will create the largest wind farm in the Horn of Africa, capable of generating some 1.4 TWh of electricity annually to power more than four million households, AMEA Power said.

The renewables company signed the PPA with utility Ethiopian Electric Power, the implementation agreement (IA) with the finance ministry, and the land lease agreement with the Somali Region State government.

AMEA Power’s wholly-owned subsidiary, AMEA Power Aysha Wind One PLC, will oversee the project’s development, construction, ownership, and operation.

The wind project officially kicked off at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai last December. It was announced at the time that Aysha-1 would be AMEA Power’s first independent power producer (IPP) project in the East African country.
