Dubai-based clean energy company AMEA Power has commissioned a 50-MW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Togo that is now among the largest ones under the independent power producer (IPP) model in West Africa.

The Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed PV plant was built in Blitta within 18 months from the signing of the power purchase agreement (PPA) to the start of commercial operations. It is able to produce almost 90,255 MWh of electricity a year that will be enough to meet the annual consumption of some 158,333 Togolese homes.

AMEA Togo Solar will operate the facility for 25 years. The West African Development Bank (BOAD) and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) each provided concessional loans for the project.

“This is an incredibly exciting time for AMEA Power, and we are on track to becoming one of the fastest-growing renewable energy IPPs, with several additional projects set to achieve financial close in 2021,” said Hussain Al Nowais, chairman of AMEA Power.

Togo aims to achieve universal access to electricity by 2030 and to increase its renewables share in the energy mix to 50%.
