Dubai-based renewables developer and operator AMEA Power LLC announced on Tuesday it has achieved financial close on a 120-MW solar project in Tunisia that will be the country’s first under the domestic concession regime.

AMEA Power won the USD-86-million (EUR 81.2m) project nearly four years ago as part of an international tender programme launched by the Ministry of Industry and SMEs in Tunisia. It then signed a concession agreement and an offtake contract in June 2021.

The company will build the facility in Metbassta, Kairouan governorate, using financing provided by the World Bank’s IFC and the African Development Bank (AfDB). The commissioning process is scheduled for mid-2025 and once completed, the solar park will be generating 222 GWh of electricity annually.

The goal of the Tunisian government is to increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix to 35% by 2030.
