Dubai-based renewables developer AMEA Power and its local partners have secured a power purchase agreement (PPA) with South African utility Eskom for a 120-MW solar park project in the African country's North West province.

The 20-year deal was sealed following a successful bid in South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), Bid Window 6, AMEA Power said on Wednesday.

The Doornhoek photovoltaic (PV) project was developed by a consortium majority-held by AMEA Power. To be installed near the town of Klerksdorp, the complex will be capable of generating 325 GWh of electricity annually to supply about 97,000 homes.

Some USD 120 million (EUR 112m) in total investment will be needed to execute the project, in which AMEA Power is partnering with Ziyanda Energy and Dzimuzwo Consulting. The Standard Bank South Africa has committed to extending debt financing, while the equity component will be funded by Industrial Development Corporation (IDC).

The PV project is expected to support South Africa’s goal of making renewables account for 22% of the national energy mix by 2030.
