Scatec inks PPA for 1-GW solar project with battery in Egypt
Sep 12, 2024 14:42 CESTDubai-based renewables developer-operator AMEA Power has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) to develop a large solar-plus-energy storage project and a utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in Egypt.
The deals with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company are for a new 1,000-MW solar power plant with a 600-MWh battery in the Benban area of Aswan Governorate and for a 300-MWh BESS, which will be an expansion to AMEA Power’s 500-MW Abydos solar project, currently under construction in Kom Ombo, Aswan Governorate. According to the announcement, these will be the largest solar photovoltaic (PV) and BESS project in Africa and the first use of a utility-scale BESS solution in Egypt, respectively.
The PPAs were signed at a ceremony on Thursday, attended by Egypt’s prime minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat.
AMEA Power expects to invest a combined USD 800 million (EUR 726m) in the two projects.
Including the newly awarded projects, it will have 2,000 MW of solar and wind and 900 MWh of BESS projects in the country. Its 500-MW Abydos solar project is due to be commissioned by October 2024, and the company is also building the 500-MW Amunet wind project, which is slated for commissioning by the third quarter of 2025.
Norwegian renewable power producer Scatec ASA also announced today the signing of a PPA for a 1-GW solar and 100-MW/200-MWh battery storage project with Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company.
