AMEA Power tapped for 300-MW onshore wind project in Ethiopia

Dubai-based renewables developer and operator AMEA Power LLC is set to build a 300-MW onshore wind farm in Ethiopia, its first independent power producer (IPP) project in the country.

AMEA Power has signed the agreement with the Ethiopian Ministry of Finance on the sidelines of the COP28 climate summit held in Dubai.

In a statement released today, the ministry described the USD-600-million (EUR 551.7m) project as "poised to become the largest wind energy project in the Horn of Africa".

Spanning 18,000 hectares, the Aysha Wind Power Project will be located in Ethiopia's Horn of Africa region. Once operational, it is expected to produce about 1.22 TWh of electricity annually.

The signing of this agreement with AMEA demonstrates the Ministry of Finance's determination to attract private investments in the energy sector and increase the share of renewable energy in Ethiopia's power mix, the statement said.
