Dubai-based renewables developer AMEA Power has received the green light to connect 2,000 MW of renewable energy capacity to Egypt's power grid by the summer of 2025.

The approval was granted by Egypt's Council of Ministers headed by prime minister Mostafa Madbouly at a meeting on Wednesday, according to a cabinet statement.

The projects include adding a further 500 MW of solar energy capacity to the 500-MW Abydos solar energy project, which is currently under construction. About 75% of the construction work has been already completed as more than 450,000 solar panels and 350 MW of trackers have been installed at the site of the project in the Aswan governorate, AMEA Power said last week.

In addition to the 1,000 MW of solar capacity, AMEA Power is building the 500-MW Amunet wind farm in Ras Ghareb which is expected to go online in the summer of 2025. The capacity that will be added includes also a battery energy storage system.
