AMEA Power to expand solar park in Togo to 70 MW, add battery

Dubai-based renewables company AMEA Power LLC will expand a solar park in operation in Togo, adding 20 MW of additional capacity and a 4-MWh battery storage system to ensure electricity supply at night.

After the expansion, the Mohammed Bin Zayed solar plant in the town of Blitta in central Togo will have a total capacity of 70 MW and will be West Africa's largest solar park, according to AMEA Power. Once completed, the facility will supply clean power to more than 222,000 households.

AMEA Power's subsidiary AMEA Technical Services will be in charge of the deployment of the additional capacity and the battery.

The project will be financed with USD 25 million (EUR 24.33m) which the Abu Dhabi Exports Office will provide to the Togolese Ministry of Economy and Finance in the form of a loan.

The first two phases of the solar farm, totalling 50 MW, went online in June 2021 and have been feeding electricity into the grid since then. The off-taker is Compagnie Energie Electrique du Togo (CEET). AMEA Power noted that the project was implemented within less than 18 months during the pandemic.

The project is part of Togo’s National Development Plan which is aimed at expanding electricity access in the West African country where currently nearly half of the population does not have access to power.
