Dubai-based renewables developer and operator AMEA Power has been awarded a 200-MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project in southern Tunisia.

The company signed a concession and power purchase agreement (PPA) for the project with the government of Tunisia on Wednesday.

The solar plant will be built in the Tataouine governorate. When operational, the facility is expected to generate 552,000 MWh annually, enough to power more than 102,900 households, and offset around 280,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

AMEA won the project following an international tender launched by the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy. The other winner in the competition is France's Voltalia SA which will build a 130-MW solar park in the country.

The award came along with the announcement that AMEA broke ground on its 120-MWp Kairouan solar photovoltaic project in Tunisia, which is set to become its first operational asset in the North African country.
