Australian startup AMSL Aero has been awarded AUD 5.43 million (USD 3.49m/EUR 3.26m) by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to develop its hydrogen-powered electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft, the agency announced today.

The aircraft, called Vertiia, resembles a helicopter and features eight rotors. It will be able to transport up to five passengers over distances up to 1,000 km (621 miles). Vertiia is intended to serve markets including air ambulance, emergency services, and passenger and cargo transport.

The AUD-10.86-million project will involve development and certification activities for the aircraft, ultimately leading to a demonstration test flight of the prototype. According to ARENA, if the aircraft proves successful, it will be one of the cheapest and cleanest means of air travel for ranges up to 1,000 km.

AMSL, based at Sydney’s Bankstown Airport, has already developed a prototype battery electric version of the Vertiia aircraft.
