UK renewables energy firm Apatura Energy announced on Thursday it has been granted planning permission for a 700-MW battery energy storage system (BESS), the largest stand-alone battery to win consent in Scotland.

The Auchentiber project, located at Port Glasgow, Inverclyde, was approved by the Scottish Government's Energy Consents Unit on Wednesday. The application was submitted in November 2023. This marks the fourth consent that Apatura Energy has secured in less than 12 months.

“We are delighted that ministers have supported this critically important scheme and the local council – Inverclyde – lodged no objections,” remarked Andrew Philpott, chief development officer at Apatura.

The decision letter says: “Scottish Ministers consider the proposed Development will support the resilience of the electricity network through the electricity it generates and the additional technical services it can provide to the electricity system operator. It will contribute to sustainable development, providing for greater and more efficient use of renewable energy generation in the electricity system, and in this regard, it will contribute to greenhouse gas emissions reduction ambitions.”
