Aquila Clean Energy, the European renewables platform of German investment firm Aquila Capital, expects to finalise the licensing process and begin construction work on a 275-MW solar project in Portugal by the end of the year.

The company said so as it unveiled plans for the establishment of a EUR-2-million (USD 2.1m) renewable energy community in connection with the solar power plant in the parish of Cercal do Alentejo, southern Portugal.

Aquila Clean Energy noted that this initiative has been agreed upon as part of the investment protocol signed with the Municipality of Santiago do Cacem for the construction of the Cercal photovoltaic (PV) power station. The measure will guarantee discounts of up to 50% on energy prices to around 400 homes, institutional consumers, and small businesses, the announcement says.

Upon completion, the solar plant will have the capacity to generate enough clean electricity to power around 141,000 local homes. The scheme has been adapted to allow for the co-existence between agricultural activities, pollinating agents, and sheep grazing in the area.
