Argentina added 65.1 MW of new renewables capacity to its electricity system thanks to the connection of two solar farms, two biogas thermal power plants and one wind farm, the energy secretariat said.

The April-June period saw the 49.5-MW La Elbita stage 1 wind farms go online in Buenos Aires province. The Victorica and Helios Santa Rosa II solar farms in La Pampa and Mendoza contributed 7.2 MW and 5.2 MW, respectively. The remaining capacity corresponds to the 2-MW San Luis biogas thermal power plant in San Luis province and the 1.2-MW Bell Ville biogas thermal power plant in Cordoba.

Argentina now has 220 operational renewable energy plants, totalling 5,961 MW, which can meet the electricity demand of over 6 million homes, the energy secretariat stated.

Together, renewables -- wind, solar, bioenergy and small hydro of below 50 MW -- accounted for 18.6% of electricity demand in April, 12.4% in May, and 14.3% in June.

With 50-MW-plus hydro in the calculation mix, the renewable power generation represented 41.45% of electricity demand in April, 39.49% in May, and 34.3% in June.
