Argentina connected three solar farms and a biogas thermal power plant during the first quarter of 2024, adding a total of 47 MW of installed renewables capacity, the energy secretariat said on Monday.

The new capacity is divided between the 20-MW 360 Energy La Rioja II and the 22-MW 360 Energy La Rioja III solar farms, both located in the town of Nonogasta in La Rioja province. The third solar farm is the 4-MW Algarrobo, located in the department of Caucete, San Juan province.

Lastly, the 1-MW Bioanglo thermal power plant came online in the town of Eufrasio Loza in Cordoba province.

With these additions, Argentina now has 215 operational plants, contributing a total of 5,896 MW of renewables to the power mix.

As for electricity supply, renewable energy sources provided 15.1% of the demand in January, 13.3% in February, and 16.4% in March, the energy secretariat said.

Argentina counts wind, solar, bioenergy and small hydro of up to 50 MW as renewable energy sources.

If the calculations took into account hydro greater than 50 MW, the renewables share would be 43.77% in January and 35.6% in February, the energy secretariat added.
