The Argentine energy secretariat on Monday announced that it has signed an agreement with governors of the ten provinces of the Grand North of Argentina to support the installation of 2,500 MW of renewable energy in the area.

The planned capacity is to be divided between solar photovoltaic, small hydro, biomass and biogas technologies.

The energy secretariat also said that it had instructed the nation’s wholesale electricity market administrator CAMMESA to sign power purchase agreements (PPAs), which will guarantee the projects get developed.

Elsewhere in Monday’s announcement, the energy secretariat said that CAMMESA signed 22 PPAs with seven companies as part of this year’s RenMDI renewables auction. The contracts will enable the development of solar farms, small hydro, biogas and biomass-fired plants in seven provinces of the Grand North region.
